Kanji

Learn Japanese: Basic Japanese
Japanese Basic Kanji Chart

kanjiKanji are the Chinese characters that are used in the modern Japanese writing system along with hiragana, katakana, Indo Arabic numerals, and the occasional use of the Latin alphabet (known as "rōmaji"). The Japanese term kanji literally means "Han characters" or "Chinese characters" and is the same written term used in the Chinese language to refer to the character writing system.

The kanji symbols, which were designed in Japan, are known as kokuji. Whereas, the Chinese characters, which have not been modified but have been given a different Japanese meaning, different from the Chinese meaning are called kokkun. Kanjis are used towrite verb stems, nouns and adjective stems. Two or more kanjis are joined to make a meaningful word. The combination of two or more kanjis to make meaningful words is known as "Jyukugo" in Japanese.

Kanji has two different readings or pronunciations namely "onyoumi" and "kunyoumi".
The kun'yomi, Japanese reading, or native reading (literally, meaning reading), is a reading based on the pronunciation of a native Japanese word, or yamatokotoba, that closely approximated the meaning of the Chinese character when it was introduced. As with on'yomi, there can be multiple kun readings for the same kanji, and some kanji have no kun'yomi at all.

Onyoumi is the native Chinese pronunciation. On the other hand, kunyoumi is the Japanese pronunciation given to the kanji. A single kanji can have both readings kunyoumi and onyoumi or only of them.

A jyukugo can be a combination of either of the following 4 types:
  1. Onyoumi + Kunyoumi
  2. Onyoumi + Onyoumi
  3. Kunyoumi + Onyoumi
  4. Kunyoumi + Kunyoumi
